Oklahoma City’s historic Gold Dome has a new owner after selling for $1.1 million at a sheriff’s auction following foreclosure. The Route 66 landmark at NW 23rd Street and Classen Boulevard had been the focus of redevelopment plans, including $3 million in proposed city tax incentives, but the unexpected sale has left those plans uncertain. Built in 1958, the distinctive geodesic dome is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has long been a recognizable part of the surrounding community.
While the new owner has not yet announced plans for the property, preservation advocates believe the building could still be successfully restored and repurposed. For OKC property owners and investors, the sale highlights both the opportunities and challenges that can come with redeveloping historic properties in growing urban areas.
