Oklahoma is now one of only six states using artificial intelligence tools to handle the administrative surge created by new federal Medicaid work requirement changes tied to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The Oklahoma Health Care Authority is deploying the system to process compliance documents, including pay stubs, class schedules, and volunteer logs, and to flag recipients who automatically qualify for exemptions.
State officials are clear that the AI cannot deny benefits or make final eligibility decisions on its own; human caseworkers must review and approve all determinations. Oklahoma must also comply with statewide AI guidelines covering ethics, cybersecurity, and mandatory employee training as part of the rollout. Separately, the state has joined a federal pilot program using AI for Medicare prior authorization reviews, a development that has raised concerns from the Oklahoma State Medical Association over potential treatment delays.
