The Oklahoma Supreme Court has struck down State Question 843, a proposal that would have gradually eliminated property taxes on owner-occupied homes with homestead exemptions by 2029. In a narrow 5-4 decision, the court ruled that the proposal conflicted with Oklahoma’s Constitution, which requires real estate to be assessed for property taxation. The measure would not have applied to landlords or investment properties and did not include a replacement funding source for schools, libraries, and counties that rely on property tax revenue.
Supporters may pursue a new proposal that would amend the state Constitution instead. For now, Oklahoma’s existing property tax system remains unchanged.
